Life’s Greatest Desire
Psalm 27
Among life’s highest pursuits, the greatest of all is knowing God.
David’s Confidence in God was Battle-Tested. (27:1-3)
- lord – “master”; Lord – “God”; Lord = YHWH – God of Israel.
- □Light (vs. dark); □salvation/deliverance, physical and spiritual well-being (Yesha/Yeshua – Joshua, Jesus!); □stronghold (rock, cave)
Hymn – Immortal, Invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes …
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might …
Great Father of Glory, pure Father of Light
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
All laud we would render, O help us to see:
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee.

David’s One Great Desire and Pursuit was Deep Intimacy with God. (27:4-6)
What could David’s one desire have been?
What is your one great desire?
For David: “… that I may dwell in the house of the Lord in order to 1) gaze intently upon the beauty of the Lord, 2) inquire) in his temple …” not simply learning, but yearning, gazing with AWE upon God’s Presence! (Psalm 26:8)
WHERE DID DAVID WORSHIP?
- The environment of the Tabernacle, of Solomon’s Temple Demonstrate the Splendor of God’s holiness & HIGH COST of entering his Presence.
Psalm 73:25 [Asaph] “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.”
David’s Prayer Life Reflected his Confidence in God … in the midst of sore and vexing discouragements. (27:7-12)
27:1-6 Talking ABOUT God – “I and Him!”
27:7-12 Talking WITH God – “I and You!” (Psalm 23)
27:1-3 – I am confidently boastful in the Lord.
27:4-6 – I want more of his very Presence.
27:7-12 – Life still hurts – BE HERE! BE MINE! BE FAITHFUL!
27:13-14 – Wait! Be strong! Take Courage! Wait!
Jeremiah 9:23 Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.”
